Releasing her clobbering single “Maniac” back in November, Jhené Aiko has now unveiled the track’s eerie video.

Directed by Aiko herself, the visual sees the singer gagged on a hospital bed, tied up in a wheel chair, or donning a Hannibal Lecter-esque mask, as mannequins that are dressed as doctors watch her. In fact, Aiko reveals that the clip is an exploration of the “bizarre techniques that were used back in the day to treat mental patients.”

“Ironically, I released ‘Maniac’ at a time where I had recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, so my interest in the research was genuine,” she told Rolling Stone, who premiered the track. “I think we all have some sort of imbalance, but I also believe that we can overcome it. I find my balance through creating art. The ‘Maniac’ visual is the story of a mental patient who finds her own cure.”
