Sophie Ellis-Bextor's 'Familia': Album Review
Is Sophie Ellis-Bextor's 6th album a return to form? Read our review and find out.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s 6th LP, Familia, was one of the forgotten gems of 2016. After reinventing herself with a folk album, the Brit returned to her dance-pop roots by infusing her new earthy sound with power chords and disco strings. It didn’t find the audience it deserved, but that might change with a belated video for “Wild Forever.” The “Bittersweet” diva filmed the video in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico — which makes sense given the project’s vague Latin theme.

“My new album Familia is the bolshier, more extrovert little sister to Wanderlust,” Sophie explained last year. “It sees the Wanderlust girl move away from Eastern Europe to the warmer, sunnier climate of South America where she’s swapped vodka for tequila.” She’s also swapped the drab ensembles of her last era for glamorous outfits, which she accessorizes with vintage scarves, gaudy jewels and an omnipresent glass of champagne. It’s simple, but effective and somehow suits the very good song perfectly.
