Viceland’s great music documentary series Noisey went to Nashville last night (January 17), and the episode included an afternoon with Kesha ahead of her performance at the historic Ryman for a Bob Dylan birthday tribute. (Her management team wouldn’t let the show film the performance, but back in May fan footage cropped up online if you wanna see it.)

The segment started out at Springwater, a dive where she and her mom have apparently been performing for years. Here, over a game of pool, the embattled star explained that because of her Nashville roots, pop began as her guilty pleasure. Things got emotional later when she’s asked in broad terms about the past few months of her life.

“To work really hard for something, and have it taken away from you is pretty devastating. I worked my ass off for a lot of years to be able to do it…It is, like, definitely a mind-fuck,” Kesha explained, before breaking down in tears.
