Missy Elliott has a viral smash on her hands with "WTF (Where They From)."

Sure, the country is about to implode and everything is awful — but there’s finally a reason to smile. Missy Elliott makes a surprise return tonight with a new single called “I’m Better.” Produced by and featuring Lamb (Beyonce’s “Countdown” and Monica’s “Everything To Me”), the track is a minimal groove with dangerously slick beats and typical lyrical brilliance from the queen of rap. It’s not as immediate as “WTF (Where They From)” or as outrageous as “Work It,” but it’s still ahead of the curve.

And, as usual, Missy takes it to the next level visually. She reunites with director Dave Meyers (“Lose Control,” “Work It” and “We Run This”) for the video and it’s a mind-boggling affair with crisp choreography, bold color and cleverly-executed underwater special effects. With any luck, this is the official lead single from the hip-hop legend’s long-overdue 7th LP, which was going to be called Block Party (at one point, at least). She’s had a couple of false starts, but I’m ready for her comeback to begin in earnest.
