John Mayer’s New Music Was Inspired By Split From Katy Perry
John Mayer is getting personal with his new music. Speaking to Rolling Stone, he says that he started writing his new album The Search of Everything after he and ex Katy Perry first split in 2014 (they briefly got back together in 2015), during what writer Jenny Eliscu calls “a deep and unprecedented sadness.”
“I actually, for the first time in my life, believe I recorded exactly what I was feeling,” John says. “It was the only time in my life that sadness was like a lucid dream, like, ‘Oh, I’m here. I got no business trying to get out of this, because it won’t work.'”
Listeners were already wondering whether John’s new music was written with Katy in mind. Earlier this week he released “Still Feel Like Your Man,” a deceptively breezy track about not getting over your ex, where he sings,”I still keep your shampoo in my shower, in case you wanna wash your hair.”
In the past, John was rumored to have written “Your Body is a Wonderland” about Jennifer Love Hewitt, and “Paper Doll” in response to Taylor Swift‘s own “Dear John,” after being involved romantically with both. This may be the first time, though, that that he addresses such rumors head on.
