Solange joined yacht rock king Michael McDonald on stage last night (March 4) for an unexpected collaboration. Both artists were set to perform at Florida’s Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival. So naturally, Solange came to Michael’s “Powow! Mashup Collaboration” to sing “What a Fool Believes.”

Michael co-wrote the 1978 soul classic with Kenny Loggins as part of the Doobie Brothers, for it to become a rare non-disco hit on the charts back then. He has since gone solo, though the song remains a live staple for him. Solange is clearly a fan, as she had no trouble handling its lovelorn lyrics and octave-spanning hooks.

“anyone who knows me knows that the doobie brothers are my musical/harmonic/chord change hero’s [sic] and that I listen to ‘it keeps you runnin’ everyday for encouragement,” the A Seat at the Table artist said on Instagram.
