Steps Return With “Scared Of The Dark” & It’s A Camp Delight

And they’re back! Steps return today with their first non-festive single since 2001 and it’s an absolute delight. The pop group picks up exactly where they left off — by channeling ABBA in a fun and frothy way. The track, which was written by Carl Ryden and Fiona Bevan, begins, somewhat deceptively, in ballad mode. “Say you’re mine and stay by my side, don’t say you’re leaving,” one of the ladies (possibly Claire Richards) sings. “Don’t turn out the lights, I’ll scream, I’ll scream, I’ll scream.” This is when it transforms into a glorious disco anthem.

“Don’t let the darkness come and hold me, I need someone cause I can’t be lonely tonight,” they chirp. “Come on baby, come and take me in your arms, I’ll never be scared of the dark.” The track couldn’t be more off-trend, but that’s what makes it so appealing. Steps isn’t trying to be current or credible. They are simply giving fans what they want in the most enjoyable way possible. The group’s comeback album, Tears On The Dancefloor, arrives on April 21.
