Don’t Sleep On Olivia Holt’s “History”

Olivia Holt performed an acoustic medley at a showcase yesterday (March 14), which is great because it gives me an excuse to write about “History.” Produced by Andrew Goldstein (Britney Spears’ “Love Me Down”) and Emanuel Kiriakou (Selena Gomez’s “Who Says”), the emo, dancehall-infused banger ranks alongside “Slow Down” and “Can’t Be Tamed” as one of the littest tracks to be released on Hollywood Records. But you won’t hear it on the radio despite being a Spotify phenomenon (42 million streams and counting).

It’s a shame “History” wasn’t pushed as the lead single from Olivia’s debut EP. I liked “Phoenix,” but it just sounded like the latest iteration of Katy Perry’s “Roar” or Sara Bareilles’ “Brave.” (I forget which came first). And let’s face it, Disney doesn’t need another purveyor of polite mid-tempo bops. If you need yet another reason to press play, the somewhat-confusing video (are they breaking up or getting back together?) stars Olivia’s Kickin’ It co-star Leo Howard. Check it out below.
