Lorde shouts out "Imagining My Man" while calling her "the most interesting artist around."

Lorde‘s “Green Light” surprised even her biggest fans, as this bitter breakup anthem that also made her dance. In the debut episode of Tavi Gevinson‘s Rookie Podcast, she revealed the song’s major inspiration: Florence + the Machine.

Specifically, she and producer-songwriter Jack Antonoff, with whom she worked for Melodramawent to a Florence + The Machine concert. “Her player did this big, kind of jangly movement with her hands on the piano, and it was literally the physicality of that movement that became the way Jack played that,” Lorde says, talking about “Green Light”‘s piano-driven bridge.

Lorde also played the “Green Light” demo and revealed one of her favorite lyrics off Melodrama: “The line is, ‘I bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark.'” Listen to the Rookie podcast episode here; Lorde discusses “Green Light” at the 25:30 mark.
