Lorde reveals how the trusted pop maestro would have rewritten the 'Melodrama' single.

Lorde debuted a new song during her first show in more than two years, building even more anticipation for sophomore album Melodrama.

On Friday (April 14) evening, the “Green Light” songwriter performed a surprise show at Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneerstown, Calif., ahead of Coachella. While there, she premiered “Sober,” the song that convinced her she was heading in the right direction.

So far in interviews, she has raised eyebrows with one lyric in particular — “My hips have missed your hips.” At the show, though, Lorde got loud cheers over a line with even more bite. “I know the story by heart,” she sings ruefully, “Jack and Jill got fucked up and possessive.”

Lorde is also performing both weekends at Coachella itself. Until then, watch the live debut of Melodrama‘s “Sober” below.
