Videos Of The Week: The Aces, Sir Sly & Blondie
Today was an unusually good day for music videos with three catching my attention, in particular. Let’s start with The Aces. The Utah band effortlessly captures the retro-synth magic of ’70s and ’80s on new single “Physical” and that’s reflected in the neon-drenched video. “The storyline is full of sarcasm and satire, and to us is a big middle finger to what’s expected from an all-female band,” they say of the Charlotte Rutherford-directed clip. If this is any indication of what’s to come on their I Don’t Like Being Honest EP, The Aces are in for a very, very big year.
Next up is Sir Sly. The LA trio has a hit on their hands with “High,” which is currently top 15 on alternative radio and finding a whole new audience thanks to its inclusion of the 13 Reasons Why soundtrack. It now has a mind-bending visual, which is described as follows in the press release: “The video explores the boundaries of reality and imagination, as a consciousness-expanding drug experience slips lead singer Landon into a psychedelic realm.” That sounds about right. Who knew that LSD and choreography would be such a good idea?
That takes us to Blondie’s “Long Time,” which is the legendary band’s best single since “Maria.” Co-written by Dev Hynes, it’s a throwback to the disco-punk sound of their hey-day complete with cascading synths and crunching guitars. The first taste of Pollinator (due May 5) gets a suitably gritty video today, which was directed by Dikayl Rimmasch (Beyonce’s Lemonade). It finds Debbie Harry hanging out in dingy New York alleys, looking way cooler than any 71-year-old has a right too. Let me pre-order the album before I forget.
