Halsey’s “Now Or Never” Gets Its TV Debut On ‘The Tonight Show’: Watch

Halsey‘s sophomore album era is off to a good start. Last night (May 4), her new single “Now or Never” got its TV debut on The Tonight Show (above). And she made a good first impression, to those who might not know her beyond The Chainsmokers“Closer.”

While still alluring, Halsey’s vocals are also rawer when she sings live, so they stand out against the electro-R&B production better than in the studio version. Her stage setup was also elaborate: In between two acrylic signs that said “MAKE PEACE” stood a white Virgin Mary statue — the clear inspiration behind Halsey’s all-white outfit. If anything, this performance should get people looking up her action-packed “Now or Never” video, which this setup references.

“Now or Never” has been critiqued for sounding a bit too similar to Rihanna‘s “Needed Me.” (For the record, this makes sense, since both songs feature writing credits by Starrah.) But it is also Halsey’s highest charting Hot 100 hit yet as a solo artist, peaking at No. 50 last month. Between this Tonight Show gig and the world tour ad that aired shortly thereafter, “Now or Never” could reach even greater chart heights.
