The former Fifth Harmony member pulls all the stops for her solo debut single.

Camila Cabello premiered her “Crying in the Club” video, directed by Emil Nava, shortly after the single itself.

The most notable aspect is its first 90 seconds. Camila previews “I Have Questions,” the second track off her upcoming debut The Hurting The Healing The Loving.

She sets the scene for the emotional journey to come, as she briefly alludes to feeling lost while touring with former group Fifth Harmony. “Why did you leave me here to burn? I’m way too young to be this hurt,” she sings. ” I feel doomed in hotel rooms, staring straight up at the wall / counting wounds and I am trying to numb them all.” You get a better sense of her writing voice than in her features in buzz tracks like Pitbull and J Balvin‘s “Hey Ma.”

From there, though, is the “Crying in the Club” video proper. And there isn’t much going on, despite lyrics like “You think that you’ll die without him / You know, that’s a lie you tell yourself.” In some parts Camila is a club queen, dancing on a platform in an outfit that interpolated artist Christina Aguilera used to wear. And when she isn’t on the dance floor, she is soaking in a bathtub, as if she had watched Rihanna‘s “Stay” video before the shoot.

In short, the “Crying in the Club” video is like the song itself — any artist could have done this. In a new interview with Zane Lowe, though, Camila explains her reasons. “I never want to make just a straight up happy song; it’s not in my nature,” she says. “But the beat has this very intense, cathartic feeling about it. It was kinda like how the writing process was saying to me.” Watch the “Crying in the Club” video up top. See the Beats 1 chat below.
