Zayn Malik’s Next Album, Out Later This Year, Has A “More Optimistic Tone”
Expect to hear more from Zayn Malik soon.
Following “Still Got Time” featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR, the ex-One Direction member should release a new album later this year, according to RCA Records CEO Peter Edge. Peter also says that, now that the rest of his former boy band have launched their own solo careers, Zayn actually seems more at ease with his solo career than before.
“It wasn’t easy making that decision and having the courage to step out first and make a record,” Peter tells Entertainment Weekly. “This album has a more optimistic tone to it after coming through that more challenging time. It shows a lot of growth.”
He also says “Still Got Time” is a good indication of what’s to come: “If you think about the lyrics, it’s talking about how it’s great to be young and knowing you’ve still got time to do everything you want to do in life.”
Zayn’s 2016 solo debut, Mind of Mine, was his attempt at sounding like an alt-R&B Lothario. For that record, he had mostly teamed with Malay, best known for his production on Frank Ocean‘s channel ORANGE. But the still-untitled follow-up will be “more personal and less producer-driven,” according to EW.
“I think he definitely wants a lot of himself in there, and I think that’s what the last record had — it maybe even gave people more insight than they thought they were going to get,” Peter says.
