There’s a major shortage of female soloists in K-Pop, with the genre still mainly comprised of manufactured girl groups and boy bands. Kim Chungha, who shot to fame last year as part of the short-lived project group I.O.I, is trying to change that. While most of her former bandmates have gone on to join new girl groups (some of which are currently flopping on the charts), Chungha was smart enough to buck the trend and go solo.

The 21-year-old just dropped her first album, Hands On Me, and it’s clear from one spin that she made the right decision. Lead single “Why Don’t You Know” is the perfect summer bop, with tropical-tinged dance-pop production from Oreo (a.k.a. Iggy from hitmaking duo Young-Bae and Iggy). With the exception of a tacked-on rap from hip-hop nobody Nucksal, the song is nowhere near as generic as you’d expect from a commercial trop-house track. On top of that, the music video is BoA-level slayage, with Chungha serving the same kind of killer choreography that the K-Pop Queen is famous for. Watch below.
