Katy Perry's 'Witness': Album Review
Katy Perry boldly explores club sub-genres on her banger-heavy new album.

Since dropping her 4th LP Witness, Katy Perry has engaged on her latest adventure, a 96-hour confessional livestream that is providing fans with unprecedented access to the pop star’s life. A lot can happen in that time. For example, Katy has invited a plethora of famous friends to join her, given interviews, sat down for a public therapy session, apologized for some mistakes, caught up on sleep and been woken up by Left Shark. It’s a lot to process, so we have selected 10 must-see moments. Get your crash course in #KPWWW below.

10. Katy Cooks With Gordon Ramsay

The pop icon was joined by famed chef and professional television hothead Gordon Ramsay for a tenure in the kitchen. “I’m a pop star, you’re a chef. Stay in your lane,” Katy pronounced while facing off in a meatball competition. Though her balls were misshapen and her noodles under-seasoned, Katy admitted that several of her boy toys have complimented her sandwich-making abilities. So that’s something.

9. Katy Perry Shades Donald Trump

Purposeful pop, indeed! During a visit with Late Night host James Corden, Katy was asked to name someone who was famous but didn’t have any talent. Her response — Donald Trump.

8. Katy Wishes Britney Well

After alluding to Britney Spears’ 2007 breakdown on the Grammy’s red carpet earlier this year, Katy apologized for making light of mental health and wished her “Ooh La La” collaborator well in a rallying cry of solidarity to all of her fellow pop stars.

7. Left Shark Returns!

Who needs an alarm when you can wake up to a performance from your own personal mascot? Left Shark woke Katy up with a performance of her latest single “Swish Swish.” Though she appeared shocked at first, the pop star rapped along to Nicki Minaj’s verse while Nugget, her puppy, tried to protect her. Everyone can’t be a fan.

6. Katy & RuPaul Play Dirty Charades

Shantay, you stay! Katy was joined by RuPaul for a game of Dirty Charades and a chat about religion. During the conversation, Katy reflected on her relationship with God and growing up with her parents who were Pentecostal ministers. Though she doesn’t always agree with her parents, she thanked them for giving her “integrity and character.”

5. Katy Forgives Taylor Swift

Putting “Bad Blood” to rest? Although both Katy and Taylor Swift have publicly exchanged barbs about their ongoing feud over the last few years, Katy offered an olive branch to the 1989 diva. “I forgive her, and I’m sorry for anything I ever did,” she admitted.

4. Sia Does Not Live In Beyonce’s Basement

Frequent collaborator and talking wig, Sia joined Katy, Anna Kendrick, and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins for a dinner, during which the “Chandelier” songstress announced that she is not being held hostage in Beyonce’s basement. In fact, the prolific Aussie recently teamed up with the #endHIV campaign to release a soulful ballad called “Free Me.” It was definitively not recorded in Bey’s home-prison. Sia promises.

3. Katy Is A Feminist

Katy revealed that she does consider herself a feminist, even though she previously shied away from the title. She explained that it wasn’t until a friend sat her down and read her the dictionary definition of feminism that she realized how closely she is aligned to the cause.

2. Katy Apologizes For Cultural Appropriation

Problematic no more! Like many pop stars, Katy has been accused of cultural appropriation. The “Chained to the Rhythm” singer sat down with activist DeRay Mckesson and apologized for past mistakes, emphasizing the importance of creating an open dialogue. “I will never understand, but I can educate myself.”

Being Katy Perry isn’t all whipped-cream bras and candy-coated synths. Under the bright pop aesthetic, the “Dark Horse” chart-topper has struggled to come to terms with her identity and fame. During an emotional therapy session with Viceland’s Dr. Siri Sat Nam Singh, she tearfully opened up about the difficulties of balancing her personal life as Katheryn Hudson with the superstar demands of being Katy Perry.

“I guess I’m really strong as Katy Perry. Sometimes I’m not as strong as Katheryn Hudson,” she said, unveiling some of her darker thoughts. Though she admitted to struggling with depression, Katy said that she channeled her feelings into her music and has come out stronger than ever. On her electro-tinged Witness track “Hey Hey Hey,” Katy proclaims her resilience. “You think that I am cracking, but you can’t break me,” the pop queen boldly proclaimed.

And it’s not over yet! Katy is wrapping up the livestream with an intimate concert this afternoon. Keep watching the live stream below.
