Try another genre? Liam Payne's 'Strip That Down' video is as awkward as the song.

Liam Payne stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night (June 21) to perform “Strip That Down,” his first solo single since leaving One Direction. Happily, the Brit’s US TV debut went off without a hitch. He delivered a competent vocal and filled the neon-lit stage with enough dancers to distract his general awkwardness. None of this seems like a natural fit for him (especially the choreography), but the 23-year-old appeared to be having fun nonetheless and that definitely came through as he loosened up towards the end.

Despite a slow start, the Ed Sheeran-penned track is shaping up to be a hit. “Strip That Down” debuted at number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100 and then started going backwards, but that’s about to change. The banger is just outside the top 20 on Spotify and approaching the top 10 on iTunes. When you factor in rising radio airplay, Liam has a genuine hit on his hands. Of course, it has already conquered the charts internationally — cracking the top 10 in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Watch him in action up top.

@jimmyfallon Thank you so much for having me. Honoured to be on the show!
