Skott’s Mysterious & Murky “Mermaid” Is A Dark-Pop Delight
Sweden’s dark-pop princess is back with another staggeringly gorgeous single. Mysterious and otherworldly, “Mermaid” picks up where viral hits “Porcelain” (Lorde’s favorite) and “Wolf” (Katy Perry’s go-to jam) left off. “I’ll be your mermaid, caught on your rock,” Skott begins the emotional ballad. “Coming for your aid, isn’t it odd?” The track glides along on a ripple of layered vocals, melancholy piano and drum beats, before exploding at the chorus. “You know that I would jump too,” she declares. “Into the blue, into the blue.”
Skott, who is tipped by many to be one of 2017’s breakout stars, also dropped the Emile Rafael-directed video and it plays like a cross between Lana Del Rey’s “Shades Of Cool” and an episode of Once Upon A Time. The clip finds the elfin diva scurrying around a lush forest, observing a silver-haired gentleman swimming laps in his pool. That is interspersed with beautiful underwater photography. I can’t tell if Skott is his guardian angel or a stalker, but it’s dark and pretty and well worth a watch up top.
