The Climb: Sales For Miley Cyrus’ ‘Younger Now’ Off To Slow Start
Miley Cyrus bared her heart and soul on 6th LP Younger Now, but sales are off to a slow start. Last week was one of the most contentious in music with massive releases from Demi Lovato, Shania Twain and Dolly Parton. The “Malibu” singer dropped her earnest collection of country-pop anthems in the midst, and it looks like the competition may not be in her favor.
HDD has adjusted sales predictions after the weekend, and it appears Miley is on track to sell between 30,000 and 40,000 copies. This locks down a top four premiere on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, landing below Shania, Demi and up-and-coming rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie. While a respectable showing, it will be her lowest placement on the chart. 2013’s Bangerz took the top spot as did her solo premiere Meet Miley Cyrus in 2007 and her sophomore effort Breakout in 2008. 2010’s Can’t Be Tamed peaked at number 3, while 2015’s Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz did not impact the charts because it was a free release.
Relatively disappointing sales can be attributed to Miley’s return to breezy country/pop after her sonic evolution between 2013 and 2015. The 24-year-old took a relatively safe approach this time around, and it is not resonating as well with fans. While Demi’s lead single “Sorry Not Sorry” is breaking into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, Younger Now is hurting for a solid radio hit.
The project’s besotted lead single was cute but ultimately failed to make a massive impact, and “Younger Now” is not finding much love either. She may have luck with edgier tracks like “Thinkin’,” but the project is ultimately lacking something as iconic as “Wrecking Ball,” “See You Again” or “Party in the U.S.A.”
A weeklong residency on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon may turn things around for the hitmaker, however. Last night (October 2) she dedicated moving performances of her defining power ballad “The Climb” and a cover of Dido’s “No Freedom” to victims of the Las Vegas shooting. Moving forward she is set to perform material from her latest LP, which will likely give her a boost in sales toward the end of the week. With solid starts from Demi and Shania it seems unlikely that she will be gearing for the top spot, but Younger Now may become a bit of a grower moving forward.
