Julia Michaels gets up-close and personal in her cute 'Uh Huh' video.

Julia Michaels sat down for an interview with Nightline and opened up about writing hits for Britney Spears (“being in the studio with her was really magical”) and Selena Gomez (“there’s not a lot of prying, she is a super open book”). The singer/songwriter also shared a moving anecdote about Gwen Stefani’s “Used To Love You.” “She had kind of these notes that she had written down on her computer,” the 23-year-old remembered. “‘I don’t know why I cried but I think it’s ’cause I remembered for the first time since I hated you that I used to love you’ and the minute she said that i was like we have have to write that, that’s incredible.”

What’s the key to writing songs for other people? “What I try to do in the studio is make people feel comfortable enough to tell me things because I think the best songs are the honest ones,” Julia explained. “If you can get somebody that you don’t really know to connect with you then you can get that person to connect with tons and tons of people.” The “Issues” hitmaker also revealed that she was inspired by Fiona Apple and shared a glimpse of a studio session with frequent collaborator BloodPop.
