With all the headlines about Selena Gomez’s reunion with Justin Bieber (apparently, they’re just friends) and breakup with The Weeknd (it’s officially over), the pop star’s Today Show interview has been overshadowed. Which is a shame because it’s really powerful. The 25-year-old sat down with best friend and kidney donor Francia Raisa to talk about her battle with lupus and the kidney transplant that saved her life. Selena reveals that she was riddled with arthritis and weeks away from dialysis.

In fact, the “Wolves” hitmaker reached the point where she couldn’t even open a water bottle. That’s when Francia stepped in and volunteered give her kidney after it was established that she was a match. Selena gives a harrowing account of the operation (she had to be rushed back into surgery due to complications) and the intense recovery period. On the bright side, the romantically-challenged diva is feeling a whole lot better and is determined to raise awareness for an illness, and procedure, that doesn’t get enough attention.
