Troye Sivan’s “My My My!” Is A Searing & Romantic Banger
Troye Sivan has officially kicked off his sophomore era with “My My My!,” and the searing track has all the makings of a major hit. The 22-year-old took the internet by a storm with the announcement of his impending release via a Times Square billboard last week. Since then he has continued to raise expectations with small teasers leading up to the final reveal. Today (January 11), he rolled out the track and its music video, and it more than lives up to expectations.
With production from OZGO and writing credits from Leland and James Alan Ghaleb, “My My My” is a romantic mid-tempo. Opening with iridescent synths, Troye enters the song over a driving beat. “Shine on, diamond. Don’t make me wait another day. ‘Cause passion is passion. You know it just as well as me,” he declares while pleading with a coy lover. The synths return as he moves into the chorus and makes his feelings quite clear. “Oh my, my, my. I die every night with you. Oh my, my, my! Living for your every move.”
In a press release, Troye spoke about the inspiration behind his new single. “‘My My My!’ is a song of liberation, freedom, and love,” he explained. He also expressed hope that it would encourage fans to “throw all inhibition to the wind, be present in your body, love wholeheartedly, move the way you’ve always wanted to, and dance the way you feel – hopefully even to this song!” Clearly, he took the message to heart in the music video, where he serves all sorts of fierce moves.
The dreamy vibes and fierce production could make for a massive radio hit, and the video is equally compelling. Directed by Grant Singer, the ’90s-tinged release is less lavish but strikingly beautiful. In it, the “Heaven” crooner dances in an abandoned warehouse. Dressed in a black-and-white ensemble, he serves endearing choreography in front of a wind machine. Later he is joined by a crew of male models who watch on as he continues to vogue along to the buoyant production.
Exuberant and brilliantly produced, “My My My!” is exactly the song that Troye needed right now. It also offers a hint at what is to come with his new album, which is set for release this spring. It is clear that the hitmaker has continued to mature since the release of Blue Neighbourhood in 2015, and he has effectively begun his new era with a strong statement. If the LP has even a handful more tracks of this caliber, he could dominate the scene this year.
2018 is shaping up to be a busy year for the budding super star. In addition to new music, he has been selected as the face of Valentino’s menswear line this spring. Troye will also appear in the film adaptation of Garrard Conley’s Boy Erased, which stars Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman. The LGBT coming of age story is due for release in September.
