Tinashe Rides A Fierce Beat On Her New Single “No Drama”

Tinashe made true on her promise to roll out new music in 2018. A week after announcing the impending release of three songs, the 24-year-old unveiled a track called “No Drama” today (January 18). Featuring Offset of Migos, it is another velvety, trap-infused banger and may be the lead single from her forthcoming LP, Joyride.

The track signifies a retreat to more comfortable ground after searching for crossover appeal with saccharine releases like “Player,” “Superlove” and “Flame.” Instead, Tinashe hops on a fierce production to drop some brag-heavy verses. “Said I’m falling off, but they won’t JFK Me. Tried to be myself, but they won’t AKA me,” she breathily vows over the driving beat. Everything builds up to the chorus, which is a bit of an earworm. “Don’t want no drama-ma. We pulled up in that ooh la la and backed out in that oh my god,” she coos.

Although “No Drama” is a relatively strong release, it could not come at a worse time. Yesterday Offset came under fire for making a homophobic comment on YFN Lucci’s “Boss Life.” He and Migos’ other members have made similar remarks in the past, and this latest one could prove toxic for Tinashe. It remains to be seen if the track will be caught up in the resulting backlash, but association with the rappers proved to be disastrous for Katy Perry’s “Bon Appetit” last year.

This is not a first for Tinashe, either. She found herself in similar hot water after teaming up with Chris Brown on Joyride’s first lead single, “Player,” in 2015. Later she would claim it was her label’s decision to feature the controversial singer, but the damage was already done. After the track bombed on the charts, the album was delayed. Hopefully she does not face a similar situation this time around. Give “No Drama” a spin below.
