Status: Paused, but with a possible reunion looming

Months after Zayn Malik quit One Direction in the middle of a tour in 2015, the band decided to go on an indefinite hiatus. Malik explained he needed time to deal with his crippling anxiety disorder and went on to have a booming solo career after he penned a song for the 50 Shades of Gray soundtrack. Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Harry Styles followed suit and all launched their own projects in the wake of their split. Tomlinson’s single “Just Hold On” hit No. 2 on the U.K. singles chart, and Style’s self-titled album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

The band hasn’t gotten back together, and with booming solo careers it seems unlikely even though Styles admitted to Rolling Stone that he would “never rule out anything in the future” because the band “gave [him] everything.”
