J-Hope of K-pop super-group BTS unveiled his debut mixtape, Hope World, and celebrated by dropping a video for his song “Daydream.” The hitmaker followed in the footsteps of fellow bandmates RM and SUGA with his solo release, which gives him an opportunity to showcase his own unique musicality. Released today (March 1), he was a driving force behind every song on the seven-track collection. A press release promises it “is the first step in j-hope’s journey to bring hope to the world through music – a true candid look into the person behind j-hope.” It is safe to say that he has delivered on his promise.

Throughout the collection, his hip-hop sensibilities are on full display. The title track opens the project and features a bold future trap production and nostalgic lyricism. Bright and playful, it is a serious hit that could dominate radio with the right push. “Daydream” is another uplifting number. Boasting a house-inspired beat, the track offers a deep dive into J-Hope (real name Jung Ho-seok). The accompanying video is a colorful explosion of energy.

Directed by YongSeok Choi, the candy-coated visual welcomes viewers into the fantastical “Hope World.” In it, J-Hope wakes up in an airy, emerald bedroom, but rapidly enters a fanciful dream world. Playing with fish in his bed and then enjoying panoramic views of a mountainous desert before performing in the desert and resting in space, it is filled with intricate details. Visually striking and overflowing with energy, it is bound to become a viral hit. Hopefully he has several other videos in the works because he has struck on something very hot here.

It is refreshing to see the members of BTS exploring their own artistry. These side projects have birthed some promising material and give the members an opportunity to flex their creative wings in between projects.
