Ryan Tedder Talks Working With Selena Gomez, Shawn Mendes & More

Ryan Tedder joined Zane Lowe on Beats 1 to discuss his ever-growing catalogue of hits, and in the process he reflected on some massive collaborations he has in the works. The lengthy interview covers topics including hits he let get away (including Beyonce’s “XO” and Ellie Goulding’s “Burn”), his tendency to work with female artists (because they have “better voices” and “reach more emotional performances”), anecdotes about recording with a bevy of other superstars (including “freakish talent” Taylor Swift) and an exclusive look at what he has been working on lately. This includes collaborations with the likes of Ellie, Shawn Mendes, Selena Gomez and Ed Sheeran.

The 38-year-old revealed that he went into the studio with Shawn, and they found a quick chemistry that led to a larger collaboration. Although he could not share much, it seems like they have five or six songs, and they are “the coolest.” “We banged out three songs in like a day. A few weeks later with his team asked if I would want to take a greater role in this album.” It seems like there is a good deal of mutual respect in the relationship, as he had nothing but positive things to say about the “Mercy” crooner. “He carries himself in a timeless way. A young gentleman and he’s timeless and he’s classic in every sense of the word. I told his team my goal for that guy is stadiums.”

Regarding his work with Ellie, he described it as “playful, nimble and emotional and at times anthemic. But that quirky girl that everyone fell in love with.” His intent is to pay tribute to her classic sound, hopefully with another meteoric smash. His work with Selena seems even more exciting. Although it was layered in mystery, Ryan admitted it felt like it “could be really big.” It also stands out from the rest of what she has recorded for her highly anticipated studio album. “I’ve heard our song is the most different from the other songs which makes me excited. It’s very stripped acoustic guitar. It’s an acoustic guitar, and it’s just a great lyrics. Two years from now, I might be a little upset that I gave it away. We’ll see. But yeah I’m excited about her. ”

The OneRepublic frontman also opened up about his experiences working with the likes of Beyonce. In particular he reflected on his experience writing “XO” and some last-minute decisions he had to make before its surprise release. In particular, he had to kick Ella Henderson out of a recording studio to finesse the release. His anecdotes about working with Adele on “Rumor Has It” are equally interesting, as are his insights about collaborating with Logic and Paul McCartney. In terms of dream opportunities, it looks like working with Justin Bieber is on the list. Check out the rest of the interview to learn more about all these exciting projects here!
