Shawn Mendes opened up about his experiences working with Teddy Geiger in an interview with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe. The twosome have collaborated consistently since 2015, with Geiger writing and producing on hits like “Stitches,” “Treat You Better,” “Mercy” and “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.” She has also been involved with work for the hitmaker’s forthcoming LP including on the Kings of Leon-inspired lead single “In My Blood.” Clearly they have developed a strong chemistry over the years, and today (April 5), the Canadian crooner opened up about how the bond has helped him grow artistically and as a person.

“She’s on every single song,” he admitted. “I think out of all people, there’s this other connection. There’s this third party that’s stepping in when we make music together. And it’s love.” But beyond the hits, Shawn talked about how much he has learned while spending time with her. Last year, Teddy came out as transgender and announced that she was transitioning in an honest post on Instagram while they were in the studio together. The hitmaker opened up about how happy he was for her to be going through the transition and the impact it has had on both of them.

In particular, he cited the first time he appropriately gendered her unconsciously as a transformative moment. Recollecting the look of “pure joy, pure happiness” on her face, Shawn talked about how important the moment was for him. “I wish everyone could experience this, because if they did, there would be no questions,” he said. “There would be no ‘I don’t get it,’ no confusion about the process.”

In the interview, Shawn also opened up about the process behind creating “In My Blood” and revealed the innovative instrument it was written on. The discussion turned to how the 19-year-old superstar stays true to himself in the face of stardom. Here, he offered some unique insight. “The hardest thing in the world is to like wake up in the morning and be like ‘today I’m me regardless of how big of a song Stitches was,'” he revealed. He said the goal is to be himself and to work toward overcoming his previous accomplishments. There is also some discussion of what the “Lost In Japan” hitmaker is listening to and some recollections of meeting the likes of George Clooney. Check out the rest of the interview below!
