Perfume Named Top J-Pop Girl Group
Perfume is one of Japan’s longest-running girl groups, and apparently still the biggest.

While K-Pop acts get most of the attention from western news outlets, Japan is home to one of Asia’s favorite girl groups. Perfume, a glamorous trio comprised of a-chan, KASHIYUKA and NOCCHi, has been churning out hits for over a decade and is still building an international following. Their last album, Cosmic Explorer, was praised by Rolling Stone, Billboard and Vogue, and they promoted it with a sold-out North American tour. As such, expectations will be sky-high for the group’s 6th LP, Future Pop.

Perfume revealed that the album will be released on August 15 and contain the singles “Tokyo Girl” (my favorite), “If You Wanna” and “Mugen Mirai.” Future Pop was produced by J-Pop pioneer Yasutaka Nakata, who also crafted Cosmic Explorer. “We’re done recording and there are so many songs that we love,” a-chan says in the press release. “Especially the last song we recorded… Nakata has been putting so much effort and revising it over and over. That song really has the signature ‘Yasutaka Nakata’ sound and I think he really does create new era in music.”
