Tinashe Gets It Right On Breezy New Single “Like I Used To”

There will be no lengthy gap between projects for Tinashe this time around. After being hit by seemingly endless delays between 2014’s Aquarius and her sophomore LP, Joyride, the 25-year-old finally managed to get the labor of love out earlier this year. Now, a new era is seemingly upon us. Today (July 13), her new single, “Like I Used To,” arrived online. After hopping genres on her eclectic album, this puts the siren firmly in her comfort zone of moody R&B. On it, she moves on from memories of an ex. “I had to let go, I’m in my bag bro. If it ain’t about the cash flow, I’m sorry got to pass on. I got to pass on you, yeah,” she announces over Hitmaka and Smash David’s production.

Fans were quick to relate the lyrics to Tinashe’s former flame, NBA player Ben Simmons. The pair recently broke up amidst rumors that he had cheated on her with Kendall Jenner. Dropping lyrics about making free throws and other basketball references may not be the most subtle way to get the final word in about the end of their relationship. Regardless, it seems as though the hitmaker is doing just fine on her own. The release is confident and sounds like it could become a respectable hit. With the right push this could easily replicate the success of debut single “2 On.” Going into a new era with a showing on the Billboard Hot 100 would be a strong sign of more to come before the end of 2018.

Admittedly, it is a little surprising to see that Tee is already moving on from Joyride. After all, the collection only dropped three months ago. However, it makes sense when you consider that the trio of feature-heavy singles (“No Drama,” “Faded Love” and “Me So Bad”) failed to resonate on the charts. Personally, I had hopes that “Faded Love” would become a well-deserved hit, but it never picked up. Considering how standout singles like “Company” and “All Hands On Deck” underperformed, it is difficult to determine what the public wants from the diva. However, hopefully Tinashe’s forthcoming material relies less on features and lets the talented diva fly on her own. Listen to her newest release below!
