Britney Spears Kicks Off Her ‘Piece Of Me Tour’ In Oxon Hill, Maryland

Tonight (July 12), Britney Spears kicked off the latest leg of her Piece Of Me Tour in Oxon Hill, Maryland. After wrapping up the final leg of her historic Las Vegas residency with a show on New Year’s Eve and a pair of televised performances on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, the siren took a short break before hitting the road for the final months of the summer. She has plans to play a series of intimate shows across the east coast this month before traveling to Europe for a string of arena shows throughout August. After seven months off, anticipation was high to see how the show would change. The 36-year-old promised to incorporate new costumes and an updated setlist, and she pulled through with a variety of small but meaningful changes.

Most notably, several new tracks appeared on the beefy setlist. In response to a smaller stage and travel requirements, songs like “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “Everytime,” which relied on intricate set pieces, have been dropped. Hours before tonight’s show, fans lit the web on fire with speculation about what new material would be added. Her take on Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative” was anticipated, and many hoped “Overprotected” would return for the first time since 2004’s The Onyx Hotel Tour. Neither made the list. However, several new tracks from 2016’s Glory were performed for the first time. The pop princess added her nostalgia-inducing “Clumsy” and the fan-favored “Change Your Mind (No Seas Cortes).” She also incorporated elements of rap trio Migos’ “Walk It Like I Talk It” to the break of “I’m A Slave 4 U” alongside her long-standing Missy Elliott medley.

The “Slumber Party” icon didn’t stray far from her comfort zone in terms of costumes. Although she debuted several new outfits, many of them felt reminiscent of looks from recent shows. She highlighted her toned body in bedazzled lingerie and playful accessories. Response to the show has been mixed since she skipped offstage following a rendition of “Till The World Ends.” Fans who have been following along with the concert series since 2013 expressed disappointment that there were not more significant changes made. Also, the smaller stage eliminates props like the larger-than-life tree used during performances of “Toxic.” But others were excited with the new additions and look forward to an opportunity to see the hitmaker touring again.

It will be interesting to see if there are any significant changes made when Britney hits Europe next month. The show will have to adjust to another change in scope as it will take place in larger venues. Hopes are still high for the opportunity for new music as well. Although it seems like “Apple Pie” has been debunked, there is still the Pitbull collab that could shake up the summer months. Guess we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, check out the updated setlist and some fan footage below!
