Ariana Grande dazzled us last night with the unveiling of her second Sweetener single, “God Is A Woman.” After surprising fans by moving up the release date, she dropped the sexually liberated anthem to rave reviews. Boasting a sultry production courtesy of Swede-pop masterminds, Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh, it is a heavenly aural experience. And it turns out the video is equally essential viewing. Today (July 13) she brought the lyrics to life in the Dave Meyers-directed visual. The pair last linked up for “No Tears Left To Cry,” and they have created another gorgeous and surreal landscape. After defying gravity in her last outing, this one sees the siren controlling the universe as a literal God. Oh yeah, it also includes that rumored feature from the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna.

In it, Ari serves a series of serious looks. The larger-than-life diva dances in the midst of a nebula whilst standing on Earth in the opening scene. Later, she sits down to control the elements from on high. In another scene, she reclines in a pool of milky water. Nude and covered in pastel paints, it is a glorious moment that was orchestrated by artist Alexa Meade. Incorporating various animations and special effects, it seems like the final goal is less to tell a cohesive story than to bring the theme of divine feminine power to life. Other notable scenes include the “Into You” princess ignoring the patriarchy and preaching in the midst of a sea of women. The Rebel Heart legend contributes a spoken word portion. “And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my sisters. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you,” she announces as Ari mouths along.

There is a lot to love in Ari’s latest video. Personally, I could do without the screeching prairie dogs and would have liked a bit more cohesion between the various scenes. But it is easy to appreciate the overall effect. All things considered, I would not be surprised if the video goes viral and gives the track a well-deserved bump on the charts. “God Is A Woman” is easily the best track we have heard off the diva’s new LP so far. With any luck, it will soon join “No Tears Left To Cry” in the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lead single peaked in the Top 3 and remains at the number 15 slot at the time of publication. That’s not all though. The euphoric bop also soared to the top spot on US Pop Radio today.

It is easy to imagine her latest recreating the feat. Give the release a view up top (or here) and revisit “No Tears Left To Cry” down below!
