Once a musician or singer reaches the first peak of their career, they can go in one of two directions: fade away or return as someone else. We love the artists who’ve taken the latter route because they’ve shown us completely different sides of their personalities we wouldn’t see otherwise. But how did they come up with their alter-egos? From Ziggy Stardust to Slim Shady and Sasha Fierce, the origins of these personalities might surprise you.

Sasha Fierce Took Over Beyoncé On Stage

Beyoncé became an R&B superstar after parting ways with Destiny’s Child. Already a powerhouse diva in the industry after two solo albums, she unleashed a bombshell for her third album, 2008’s I Am… Sasha Fierce.

But who was Sasha Fierce? “I have someone else that takes over when it’s time for me to work and when I’m on stage, this alter ego that I’ve created that kind of protects me and who I really am… Sasha Fierce is the fun, more sensual, more aggressive, more outspoken side and more glamorous side that comes out,” Bey said in a statement at the time.
