Zayn Malik has yet to confirm a release date or title for his sophomore LP, but we have already heard a handful of songs that are expected to make the final tracklist. The 25-year-old kicked off the project by linking up with Sia on last year’s “Dusk Till Dawn.” A sweeping ballad, it went Top 5 in the UK and landed at number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, he has highlighted his creative range on a variety of singles and buzz tracks. “Let Me” delivered a hit of saccharine-sweet R&B, “Entertainer” travelled in a moodier direction and “Sour Diesel” took on a rock edge. Now he linked up with Timbaland on his latest single, “Too Much.” After announcing the collaboration earlier this week, it arrived online today (August 2). And with one listen, it is clear this may be his next big hit.

2018 is shaping up to be the year of the emo banger. Over the course of the last few months, many of pop’s biggest names have delivered bleak messages over high octane productions. “Too Much” sees Zayn join in on the craze, and it turns out that he fits right in. Over murky beats, the hitmaker longs for a real connection in his relationship. Meanwhile, his partner is alright with keeping things casual. “I guess I want too much. I guess I want love and lust. You just can’t love enough, that’s why I need a touch,” he mourns. Timbaland contributes vocals on the chorus and adds some additional drama to the failing relationship. “I wanted it all, didn’t expect it to fall. Must be an affliction.” The pair dropped an animated video alongside the single. In it, a character modeled after the “Pillowtalk” crooner executes backflips and dances in front of a car.

Considering the string of action-packed visuals that have accompanied Zayn’s last few releases, I’m holding out hope that he has something a little more involved up his sleeve for an official video. Of all the tracks he has released in the last few months, this may be his best chance to climb the charts again in the US. He hasn’t cracked the Top 40 on the Hot 100 since “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” and is due for a moment back on top. Another strong video will just give him a bit more of a push.
