One of the most exciting developments of the year has been Cher announcing plans to drop an ABBA cover album. The 72-year-old decided to put together a tribute to the Swedish pop geniuses after appearing in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again last month. And we have officially been blessed with a first taste of the project. Just yesterday (August 8), the enduring diva took to social media to tease the arrival of the project’s lead single, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight).” First released in 1979, it was reintroduced to pop fans when Madonna sampled it on her Top 10 hit “Hung Up” in 2005. This morning she graciously unveiled her take on the classic, and it is predictably fantastic.

In her very capable hands, Cher puts her own spin on the timeless anthem. Her voice soars over the iconic production, and it is enough to confirm that she will be slaying the game once again. The legend opened up about her decision to record the album in an interview with Kathie Lee Gifford on Today. “After I did ‘Fernando,’ I thought it would really be fun to do an album of ABBA songs, so I did!” Just like that. However, she emphasized that she was putting her own spin on the tracks. “It’s not what you think of when you think ABBA, ’cause I did it in a different way.” The tracklist, which pairs some of ABBA’s biggest hits like “Waterloo” and “Dancing Queen” with a couple of comparatively obscure gems like “Chiquitita” and “One Of Us,” makes things even more promising.

All things considered, it is clear that Cher has one of the most anticipated projects of 2018 on her hands. And based on her first single, it will definitely live up to expectations. Listen to the icon tackle the bop below!
