Flashback: Vanessa's 'Say OK'
We reflect on the misunderstood genius of Vanessa Hudgens' 'Say OK.'

One of pop’s most underrated princesses is returning to us. Vanessa Hudgens, the “Sneakernight” icon, linked up with Los Angeles electronic duo Phantoms on their new single, “Lay With Me.” Out today (September 28), it is an infectious anthem that feels like a serious hit. On it, Baby V cozies up to a lover and prays they spend the night. “Just the thought of letting go, makes me wanna pull you closer. Close enough so you can whisper every line,” she seductively coos over a sizzling production courtesy of Kyle Kaplan and Vinnie Pergola. On the chorus she makes her desires even more clear. “I want you to lay with me. I don’t know where this is going. Every time we touch it’s gold. Want you to lay with me,” she boldly belts.

Effortlessly capturing the rush of a relationship in its earliest stages, Vanessa shines on the release and highlights just how much her voice has evolved since her debut in the early millennium. Phantoms described the collaboration as a “serendipitous experience” in a press release. Why? I’m glad you asked. “We grew up with Vanessa then weirdly ran into her at the airport last year and talked about working on music at some point,” they explained. “Then a few months later we got in the studio and recorded this song. It was a cool way to reconnect since the last time we all hung out we were around 16 years old. So happy this song is finally out, it’s one of our favorites.”

Things are about to get even better. In her statement, Vanessa revealed that a video is in the works. “I’m so excited for this song and music video,” she gushed. “I loved being in the studio again working with phantoms. Crazy we reconnected all these years later and got to create something we’re all very proud of.” Hopefully this will spark a renaissance of the “Say OK” siren’s career. Last year V treated us to a handful of promising collaborations (including Shawn Hook’s “Reminding Me”), but I’ll never give up hope that she has a new album’s worth of material on the way. In the meantime, “Lay With Me” offers a taste, and it is abundantly clear that she has gotten even better with age. Listen to the trio’s future-hit below!
