Kim Petras is a fairytale princess with a twist in her adorable 'Heart To Break' video.

There is no doubt that Kim Petras is a fan of Halloween. And it looks like the spooky holiday came early this year. The budding pop princess celebrated the arrival of October 1 by delivering the ultimate treat – a mixtape of new music. After uploading a bevy of eerie photos to social media, the “Can’t Do Better” siren unveiled Turn Off The Light, Vol. 1 at the stroke of midnight ET. The eight-track collection caters to fans of tightly produced pop bops and all things fright-inducing.

Kim wastes no time in setting the scene for the collection. The mixtape opens with the chilling “o m e n.” Over an ominous production, the German hitmaker chimes in with some heavenly vocals. From there she transitions into “Close Your Eyes.” Here she shares a word of warning with her latest target. “I feel it coming on. You’ve got nowhere to run. There’s no way you’ll make it out alive,” she announces over the racing beat. “Oh when it’s after dark I’m gonna eat your heart.” We stan a zombie-fied banger. The brilliantly titled “TRANSylvania” features minimal vocals but feels very on brand with its throbbing bass and haunting sound effects.

Meanwhile “Turn Off The Light” features an appearance from the Mistress of the Dark herself, Elvira. The goth queen hops on the bridge to share an enticing message. “Embrace your fear, don’t dare to run. Only then will you be what you’re meant to become.” It perfectly complements Kim’s delivery as she encourages a potential lover to ride the fine line between pain and pleasure. “Feelin’ malicious. Heard you like it vicious. All your dirty wishes, we were meant to do it,” she sensually teases. Dangerous love is a recurring theme. On “Tell Me It’s A Nightmare” the diva takes aim at her flame’s heart once again.

“Be careful when you love me. I’m only out for blood. You know I’d be the end of you, but you always wanted more,” she warns, but it is clearly too late. “I don’t wanna die…” is another synth-driven transition that could soundtrack any night in the club, as is the closer “Boo! Bitch!” However, “In The Next Life” is a moment of dark pop genius. “I’m the greatest, God created. I’m a sickness. I’m contagious. I’m a demon, power trippin’,” she powerfully chants before shifting to German on a later verse. The electro-kissed banger is one of the strongest on the mixtape, and Kim’s claims of “they’ll remember me” are certainly true (and chill-inducing).

With Turn Off The Light, Vol. 1, Kim notches yet another serious win in 2018. This is proving to be a breakout year for the mega-talented up-and-comer. Her buoyant “Heart To Break” garnered critical acclaim and is one of my favorite songs in recent memory. I still have it on heavy rotation, and, clearly, I’m not alone. After amassing more than 11 million streams on Spotify, it is expanding her reach to a new audience of pop fans. The same could be said for her flirty “All The Time,” which is also netting some promising streaming numbers since dropping last month.

Her debut mixtape shows off a different side of Kim and provides plenty of hits. She is currently touring North America with Troye Sivan on his Bloom Tour. I’m holding out hopes that she’ll add several bops from the collection to her tracklist. In the meantime, press play on the collection below and prepare to get in a Halloween state of mind.
