Halsey Gets Real On Stand-Alone Single, “Without Me”

Halsey’s “Without Me” premiered earlier today (October 4) as Zane Lowe’s World Record on Apple Music’s Beats 1 and it shows a completely new side of the hitmaker. Instead of hiding behind a persona or alter-ego (as she does on most of her songs), the 24-year-old dissects the very-public highs and lows of her relationship with G-Eazy. “It’s the most raw thing I’ve ever made and not just because of the content because I make concept albums so I have these comic book universes where I’m playing a fantasy character,” Halsey explained.

“This song is not attached to an album. It’s a standalone record,” she continued. “I was supposed to be taking a break and then I wrote this song and it’s like music doesn’t care about your schedule… and so here I have this record where it’s like it’s just me you know. No wig, no colorful hair, no character, and it’s about my life and about my relationship that the world has watched so closely and so vehemently like in the past year and a half.” Washing off the pop star camouflage results in her most honest and relatable song to date.

“And then I got you off your knees, put you right back on your feet,” the “Bad At Love” singer accuses over synths and finger snaps. “Just so you can take advantage of me.” She really goes for the jugular on the chorus. “Does it ever get lonely?” Halsey ponders, “Thinking you could live without me.” Check out the song below and stay tuned for a very different kind of video. “It’s like me in a white T-shirt with normal hair just like singing to the camera,” she told Zane. “No character, no cinematography, no gunfight, car explosion.”
