Somme, the moniker of San Diego’s Jordan Cantor, casually released one of the year’s best EPs in May. That self-titled collection of intricately-woven pop songs hinted at much bigger things to come and she makes good on that promise less than six months later. The rising star joins the New Music Friday lineup on October 12 with “Broken Hearted Lovers,” an instantly catchy electro-pop anthem with an all-too relatable subject matter. “I wrote this song shortly after a break up before I had even realized I was going through a break up,” she explains.

“It was at a time shortly before the emotions had started to set in, before the feelings of sadness and guilt had fully developed,” Somme continues. “Instead, the only thing on my mind was meeting new people, maybe getting a little too drunk, and dancing until the lights at the bar came on.” Those themes are artfully conveyed in the choreography-heavy video. “When I first showed this song to director Bia Jurema she got it,” the “Long Time” singer reveals. “She knows me well and understood exactly what this song was about and what the video needed to portray.”

“The inspiration behind this video was the dance most of us have done with one or multiple lovers after a break up. We all know the feeling of turning to other people, whether they be strangers or acquaintances, during a break up for that physical and/or emotional connection we are longing for post break up. Each dancer is a broken hearted lover and so is Somme.” We’re excited to premiere the song and video below.
