Avril Lavigne drops the cinematic video for comeback single, 'Head Above Water.'

After a five-year absence, Avril Lavigne returned to music scene in September with a powerful ballad called “Head Above Water.” A plea to God for strength during a time of crisis, the song immediately struck a chord with listeners and topped the iTunes download chart. Not only that, but the Canadian has seemingly dodged the curse of the legacy act. “Head Above Water” is starting to gain traction on Spotify and could turn out to be a sleeper hit. As such, it’s only fitting that the 34-year-old has been rewarded with a Billboard cover.

Avril plays up to her Peter Pan-rocker imagine in the shoot, albeit with a more adult twist. (For example, instead of swigging beer, she drinks a glass of champagne in bed). In addition to posing for pics, the comeback queen opens up about her new single. “I had accepted that I was dying,” she says in reference to her battle with Lyme Disease. “And I felt in that moment like I was underwater and drowning, and I was trying to come up to gasp for air. And literally under my breath, I was like, ‘God, help me keep my head above the water.'”
