Normani & Khalid's 'Love Lies' Video
Normani puts on a show in the video for 'Love Lies,' her sexy collaboration with Khalid.

Normani’s solo career is off to a flying start with a top 10 hit (a duet with Khalid called “Love Lies”), two Calvin Harris collaborations and a stunning Paper magazine cover. She looks every inch a pop pin-up girl in the bubblegum-colored shoot, which was heavily influenced by ’90s fashion and culture. While solo superstardom beckons, the 22-year-old has nothing but kind words to say about Fifth Harmony. “There’s just something special being able to call something ours versus just yours,” the breakout star says in the cover story. “Everything that I went through in the group, and everything that we went through together, prepared us to be able to do what we’re doing right now.”

Naturally, the conversation turned to her new music. “It’s a brand new world of self-discovery for me, and I’m still in the process of that,” Normani admits. “There’s been so many things that I’ve been able to do. I’ve been able to write more, and I’ve even been having fun in terms of producing. I’ve learned that I actually have that ear and that I know what I want. I’m learning the terminology and all the technical side of it. I’m really hands on in every single aspect of my music.” She also dropped some clues about her debut LP.

“Sultry, smooth, dominant, empowering and entertaining,” Normani says when asked to describe the project. She also lists Destiny’s Child, TLC, Norah Jones and Shania Twain as influences. “I want to create records for women that haven’t been created yet — records that women need,” the Houston-based hitmaker reveals. “The record that I need to feel good when I don’t feel so good. My job as an artist is to be as honest as possible.” Read the full interview here.
