I have so many questions about ZAYN & Nicki Minaj’s “No Candle No Light.” Why does the cover look like it was made in Microsoft Paint? How are we seven songs into the Brit’s sophomore era and still have no idea what direction it’s going to take? Who thought it was a good idea to leave this on a shelf for (at least) two years and roll out duds like “Sour Diesel” and “Too Much” instead? As for the song, it’s fine. The production sounds a little dated, but this could still work on multiple radio formats.

“Hand on your hand, chest on your chest,” ZAYN coos in the opening verse. “Tangled in bed but I’m feeling you less.” Nicki also admits that the spark has gone. “We gotta, we gotta, we gotta face it,” she laments. “The fire, the fire ain’t no longer blazin’.” After more heartache, we finally arrive at the chorus — which is accompanied by a surprise detour into EDM territory. “No candle, no light for you,” they sing, acknowledging the last, dying gasp of their relationship over club beats. The subject matter is certainly relatable and it’s catchy enough.

Listen to “No Candle No Light” below. Hopefully, ZAYN’s sophomore era comes together in 2019. Because things are starting to get confusing.
