The social media sensation opens up about her debut single & future plans.

Mariah Carey wasn’t the only pop icon rolling out new music on Friday (November 16). Former Dance Moms starlet and viral sensation JoJo Siwa also release an EP called D.R.E.A.M., and it’s a throwback to a simpler time when child stars released heavily auto-tuned songs about singing in the mirror and hanging out with their friends. There’s nothing remotely controversial here; no bad language or age-inappropriate lyrics. That makes it a hard slog for anyone out of puberty, but it’s also oddly refreshing.

The EP kicks off with the ruthlessly upbeat “D.R.E.A.M..” A harmless ditty about following your dreams, this taps into the mid-’00s obsession with cheerleader-pop. “Everyday Popstars” is just as perky. And just as corny as the title suggests. It reminds me of Miranda Cosgrove’s iconic oeuvre, which isn’t a terrible thing. Less endearing is “My Story.” This tune finds JoJo Siwa showing off her rap skills and it’s not pretty. Happily, the EP ends on a high note. “Only Getting Better” is undeniably cute teen-pop.
