Robin Thicke stages a musical comeback with the release of his new single, “Testify.” It’s been two years since the 41-year-old dropped a single and even longer since the release of his seventh studio album in 2014. But he makes up for lost time with the unveiling of his latest effort today (December 12). Of course, a lot has changed for the “Blurred Lines” chart-topper over the years. And it hasn’t all been good. So, it is hardly surprising to see him acknowledge some of his previous challenges on the confessional track. “I was standing on a mountaintop, the sunshine smiling on my face. Breeze was taking me away. It was the perfect day and everything changed,” he admits. “At my lowest, it dawned on me. I’d forgotten who I’m supposed to be.”

However, he reiterates his feelings for a loved one on the chorus. “I testify. I pledge allegiance to you,” he croons. “This love inside, it makes me come back to you.” Co-produced with frequent collaborator Pro J, the stripped-back anthem is as a nice reintroduction to Robin. Not only that, it also serves as a promise that more music is coming in the near future. “When I made this record I wanted to sing my whole truth and lead off the new album singing my ass off,” he explained in a press release. He shared a bit more about the mysterious, forthcoming project in an interview with Zane Lowe.

Promising that his eighth LP is nearing completion, he opened up about how the project changed after the death of his father. “Well, it’s funny you know, my father passed away a couple of years ago and I thought I had an album and I had these songs that I wanted to put out, and then when that happened, it was something I wasn’t expecting and it just kind of rattled my soul,” Robin said. “So, I took some time to re-think the album and then these songs started pouring out that had more meaning and more weight to them. If “Testify” is anything to go by, it sounds like he will be returning to his former glory. Press play on on his new single below!
