Charli & Troye Go Back To '1999'
Charli XCX and Troye Sivan take us back to '1999' on their nostalgic collab.

When she’s not working on her elusive third LP or penning hits for other artists, Charli XCX apparently keeps herself occupied by piecing together buzz-worthy girl bands. The mad scientist of pop just signed Nasty Cherry to her Vroom Vroom Recordings imprint and, naturally, co-wrote their debut single. And it’s a beauty. The quartet, which is comprised of Gabbriette Bechtel (lead vocals), Chloe Chaidez of Kitten (guitar), Georgia Somary (bass) and Deborah Knox-Hewson (drums), serves on-trend, lo-fi alt-pop with shades of The Cure and Joan Jett.

“We’ve played this game twice, I won’t play nice,” Gabbriette (or Gabz) sings menacingly over muted synths and a throbbing bass line. “You can’t take me down, baby roll the dice.” That takes us to the deceptively simple chorus. “I need to win, I need to win.” It might be brief, but it sure packs a punch. All in all, “Win” is a very promising starting point. These women have the talent, look and sound to be a real force. I can’t wait to hear what they do next. One thing’s for sure, it won’t be boring.
