Disco Queen! Carly Rae Jepsen Longs For Lost Love On “Julien”

Mark your calendars. Pop music is saved May 17. That’s the day Carly Rae Jepsen unveils her album Dedicated. And based on the (cruelly slept-on) content we’ve heard thus far, the era is shaping up to be on par with her critically acclaimed E·MO·TION. The 33-year-old kicked things off with her self-love anthem “Party For One.” Then she proved that the only thing better than one new CRJ song was two with dual singles “No Drug Like Me” and “Now That I Found You.” Toss in a fantastic album cover, and things are looking very good heading into the release. They only improve with the unveiling of yet another taste of the tracklist – “Julien.”

Out today (April 19), the disco-inspired bop is a shimmery floor filler. Over slippery synths and a driving beat, the pop star faces off with memories of an enduring flame. “I tried another to keep my satisfied. But all your colors are still dancing in my mind,” she admits on a particularly evocative verse. However, her efforts are not successful. “More than just lovers, I’m forever haunted by our time.” That cuts deep, and the chorus hits just as hard. “To the end, to the last breath that I breathe, I’ll be whispering Julien.” With any luck, this will get the radio support her last few singles deserved. Either way, it has me counting the literal seconds until Dedicated arrives in full.

The hitmaker opened up about the release in a tweet. “Julien is the song that taught me the heart and direction of this album,” she wrote. “Couldn’t keep him for myself any longer.” One thing is clear at this point – Carly is not playing games this era. Press play on “Julien” below.
