Shawn Mendes Is Seriously Besotted On “If I Can’t Have You”

Shawn Mendes will play a new single when he stops by Saturday Night Live this weekend. But fortunately, we don’t have to wait that long to hear it. Today (May 3), the hitmaker blessed New Music Friday with “If I Can’t Have You.” Written with assistance from frequent collaborators Scott Harris, Teddy Geiger, and Nate Mercreau and produced alongside Geiger, it captures the feeling of being head-over-heels for someone. Not just anyone, either. It’s about someone he has history with. “I can’t write one song that’s not about you. Can’t drink without thinking about you,” he admits on the anthemic chorus. “Is it too late to tell you that everything means nothing if I can’t have you.”

The track arrived alongside a cute black-and-white video. In it, the hitmaker goes through the motions while dreaming about cozying up next to his beloved. He opened up about the infectious bop in an interview for Beats 1. Aside from revealing he considered sending it to Dua Lipa, he shared some insight into how it fits with other material he’s written recently. “It’s a confident pop record and it’s clearly that for me,” he explained. “I’m going through this phase right now where I’m testing out all the styles I can possibly be doing. Pop is whats in my blood no pun intended.” About that new music? Apparently he has about 45 songs from the last six months.

Does that mean a new album (Shawn’s fourth) is on the way? If so, expectations are sure to be high. His last three all debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, after all. Not only that, but they birthed no shortage of serious hits. All things considered, “If I Can’t Have You” sounds like his next. In fact, this could very easily become his first number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Give the single a listen and check out the video below.
