Charli XCX, Diplo & Herve Pagez Reimagine A Spice Girls Hit On “Spicy”
It’s here! Charli XCX teams up with Diplo and Herve Pagez for a demented cover of a Spice Girls classic. Namely, “Wannabe.” Their version is largely faithful to the original — at least, in the verses — but things get a little wild on the chorus. Why does this glorious oddity exist? “[I] looked up to the pop gods and they said ‘Charli — you’re the chosen one: honor the spice girls’ return with a mind blowing version of one of their iconic smash hits’ & I said ‘k no probs hun I got this,’” the pop star wrote on Instagram.
“So I called Diplo & Herve Pagez & ‘SPICY’ was born.” The Reed + Rader-directed video also dropped this morning (May 30) and it’s suitably out-there. Charli and friends dance with dolphins and eat in a futuristic diner surrounded by UFOs, among other totally normal activities. And no, the Brit hasn’t forgotten about “Blame It On Your Love.” The Lizzo-assisted banger is still Charli’s main focus as she puts the finishing touches on her third LP. Prepare for a surge of nostalgia and watch the video below.
