Album Review: Madonna's 'Madame X'
The Queen of Pop pushes the boundaries of pop on her radical new album.

“God Control” is arguably the most ambitious video of Madonna’s iconic career. Directed by longtime collaborator Jonas Åkerlund (“Music” and “Ghosttown”), the 8-minute epic is a powerful plea for gun reform. It begins with Madame X furiously typing away about the state of moral decay in America, before a nightclub shooting is graphically depicted. The clip then moves in a non-linear fashion as scenes of the pop icon disco dancing in a Studio 54-styled club are intercut with a choir, news reports and protest footage.

“This is your wake up call,” Madonna wrote on Instagram. “Gun violence disproportionately affects children, teenagers and the marginalized in our communities. Honor the victims and demand GUN CONTROL. NOW. Volunteer, stand up, donate, reach out. Wake up and insist on common-sense gun safety legislation.” She then spoke about doing her part. “I want to draw attention through my platform as an artist to a problem in America that is out of control and is taking the lives of innocent people,” the 60-year-old explained. “This crisis can end if our legislators act to change the laws that fail to protect us all.”

The Madame X era has been visually flawless, but “God Control” is easily the highlight. It also suggests that we might be getting a visual album. After all, this is the fifth video from Madame X and it was only released a couple of weeks ago. Watch the graphic and disturbing clip below.
