Madonna truly gave the gays everything we wanted and then some for Pride Month this year. Of course, the Queen Of Pop’s greatest gift was new music. Madame X, her 14th studio album, arrived and topped the Billboard 200. The LP marked her ninth to pull off the feat and proved that she is still very much rewriting the rulebook years into her career. But that’s not all. The living legend capped off the month with a performance during New York City’s Pride Island 2019. Last night (June 30) she took the stage at the event for a brief but powerful set.

After opening with her enduring anthem “Vogue,” Madonna moved into “American Life.” From there, she highlighted two of Madame X’s politically charged anthems – “God Control” and “I Rise.” During the set, she recognized the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots with an impassioned speech. “Fifty years, people,” she said. “Fifty years of celebrating. Fifty years of revolution. Fifty years of freedom fighting. Fifty years of putting up with discrimination, hatred and indifference. Fifty years of blood, sweat and tears. Fifty years of not bowing down to fear.”

“We have been on this journey together, and I am so proud and honored to share this historical evening with you.” she said. Madonna also shared a message of love and respect for the LGBTQ+ community. “Since I came to New York as a wee little girl I have always been embraced by queer nation. I always felt like an outsider, but you made me feel like an insider. Like a somebody. Like I was important. And that it was OK to be different. So you must know how much I love and appreciate everyone here tonight.”
