George Maple Takes A Stand On Empowering Single, “Magic Woman”

DJ Snake & George Maple's 'Talk'
The Aussie singer teams up with DJ Snake for a wistful banger called 'Talk.'

George Maple is one of music’s best-kept secrets. Whether she’s sprinkling a little gold dust on other artists’ songs (often uncredited) or dropping her own, the Aussie singer always comes through with something special. That trend continues with “Magic Woman,” a song that finds the “Talk” hitmaker walking away from a shitty relationship. “So I kept myself tight, ’cause it wouldn’t be nice,” Jess Higgs (her real name) sings in an early verse. “It would be unkind for me to unwind and so I sip from my wine.”

However, she has had an epiphany by the time the chorus comes around. “I’m a magic woman, but I’m not the one you seek,” George purrs over synths. “See, I value, value me too.” It turns out, the song is based on personal experience. “At an immediate and visceral level, this song was born from the co-dependency of love, sadness and rage,” the alt-pop star states. “A few years ago now, towards the end of a dying relationship, the person I loved expressed his disappointment with ‘the person I had become.'”

“The anger, the fire, the passion, the drive… I was suppressing rather than embracing as it did not fit with who I was expected to be and the role I was expected to play,” she continues. “When I look back I was deepening, finding my voice, making mistakes, failing and getting back up again, struggling and slowly touching on the truth I had been hiding from. This single conversation was the birth of ‘Magic Woman.'” Listen to George’s first single since dropping 2017’s excellent Lover LP below.
